High Tide in Hawaii

As the children arrived, they worked on a Magic Tree House word search, maze, and matching activity.

I summarized the twenty eighth book, High Tide in Hawaii, and asked the children a variety of questions about the book.

When we arrived at the part in the book where the tree house spun, each child received a Dizzy Pill (which is actually a Tootsie Roll) to help make them less dizzy. After eating their Dizzy Pills, the children were instructed to spin around three times, as if they were in the spinning tree house.

When we got to the part in the book where Jack wrote in his notebook, I showed the notebook I made that has all of Jack's notes in it.

For the first craft, the children created their own leis. Prior to the meeting, I printed pictures of flowers onto multicolored paper. I then cut out and hole-punched each flower, as well as cut colored straws into smaller pieces. At the meeting, each child strung these flowers and straws onto their piece of yarn. The children wore the leis for the remainder of the book club.

Next, I passed out visors to each child. They decorated these with markers and ocean-themed foam stickers. The children especially enjoyed this activity!

For the last craft, the children decorated red Hawaiian cups, using the stickers and various colored Sharpies I provided. All of the cups turned out great! When the children were finished decorating, I gave each of them a crazy straw for their Hawaiian cup.

It is hard to believe that this was the last book club meeting. It has been an amazing 28 weeks, and I am so glad I had the opportunity to share my love of reading with the children. I am definitely going to miss everyone! Before saying goodbye, I surprised the children with cake pops that I had baked earlier that day. I passed out Ziploc bags, so the children could take their cake pop home for dessert.
